She can be more than a princess.

Since I’ve become a new dad I constantly worry about how my little girl will be treated by the world and how she’ll see herself as she grows up. I want her to think she can do anything, and to love and believe in herself as much as we do. To that end, I think it’s important she pretend to be as many things as possible as she plays and learns, and to try and show her some real life heroes to contrast the endless parade of people calling her a princess as she grows up (I love you mom, you’re allowed).

I’m not opposed to some occasional princess make believe, she can dress up in a pretty dress, have some tea, pretend to ride some horses. I’ll play, sounds fun! And some of the Disney princesses are quite brave and have some lessons to teach. But for every time Grace dresses as a princess I want her to play as a scientist, a pilot, a firefighter or an astronaut.

I guess I just don’t think stifled women born into wealth with no control over their own destiny are the epitome of role models. 😉

A million times yes. Likewise, I deplore the idea that girls “need” a superhero. They can be one, and they have countless fabulous role models to chose from!
