P52: Week 28 — Texture

This week’s P52 assignment was to capture texture in a 2D photograph. As per the definition:

Texture, artistically-speaking, is a reference to the way a real, 3-dimensional object feels to the touch (those 3 dimensions being an object’s width, height and depth).

In photos, though, we don’t work in 3-D (not yet, anyway). Photographically-speaking, a reference to texture is a reference to the way an object *looks* as though it may feel if it touched it in real life. In the same way that, if you were to lose your sight your hearing would strengthen, photographers lose the advantage of the third dimension (depth), so we must use other qualities (color, line, shape and {yes} texture} to create the illusion that depth still exists.

There are textures all around us, and the way you choose to photograph them (and, by extension, edit them) will have a huge effect on the outcome of an image.

I hadn’t actually looked at the assignment until after I was back from SDCC, and I was pleased that this shot from my series of Cosplayers on Their Phones worked so well for the theme. Voila!

  1. […] This week’s Clickinwalk Project 52 assignment was texture. Because pictures can only show two dimensions, photographers use light to enhance the texture of our subjects, so they look more real. See more texture-filled photography on our blog circle, beginning with Kate . […]

  2. I’m jealous you went to the Comic Con! 😀

I see at least 4 textures in this photo, on your subject alone!
