2019 P52: Week 38 — Environmental Portrait

This week we are going to up the challenge and try an environmental portrait.  When I first heard this term, I thought it meant photographing your subject in the natural environment.  This is not the case!  An environmental portrait places the subject in surroundings that speak to their identity or profession.  It kind of reminds me of classical paintings where the subject is posed with pertinent objects that allude to their interest, such as paintbrushes to indicate that they are a painter.   An environmental portrait is often static and posed, but it can also show the subject in action, for example working in their profession.

I’d love to try this again in a more staged environment, but this is my take! A shot of my client at a corn maze, but the people and the equipment behind her tell the bigger story — she’s on a film set for a movie based on the book she wrote, and the sign and the maze are all props for the film.
