2019 P52: Week 43 — Street Photography

This weeks theme may be as popular as the last one I posted (mobile photography)but it might just prove to be as fun and/or challenging.  Street photography is one of my favourite genres to shoot.  If truth be told, I really don’t like to label photography.  I like too many different genres to be considered a particular type of photographer.  I just call myself a photographer.  I shoot what moves me at a particular moment in time.  I just happened to be compelled to want to photograph what I see when I’m on the streets.  To me it’s a way to document how we all exist in this world.  How chance brings us together whether we engage in conversation, share a passing smile or just the randomness of occupying a space at the exact same moment.  I like how it makes me feel connected to humanity, part of a bigger picture.

Now I know this week is going to push a lot of you out of your comfort zones.  And I know that lots of you don’t live near cities.  That’s okay!  All I really want you all to do this week is to tell the stories of the world around you and how humans connect with their surrounding.  This certainly doesn’t have to be an in-you-face type image.  If shooting people makes you sweat, then try shooting their shadows or from behind.  Look for reflections in windows or puddles.  I also like to look for details like store windows or seasonal displays in people’s front yards. Really any sign that humans were here.

Assignment: Now grab some nerve and your camera and let’s see your stories of the street.  If shooting with your DSLRs is too intimidating, please feel free to use your smartphone cameras.  Last month I share THESE IMAGES that I took while on vacation that I shot with my cell phone.  The key is to look for great light, interesting characters and visual interest such as colour and lines.

I definitely wanted to really play with the “street” part of street photography, so I waited until I was in HIlton Head for The Photographer’s Retreat where I could shoot with more anonymity. I’m pretty happy with what I got!
