Settling In!

A long-delayed update on the move, unpacking, and making our home in Nanaimo.

Sorry for the long delay since my last update! It was hard to find time over a twenty-some hour drive to share news from the road, and once we did get here to our new home, it was a frantic week of trying to unpack and find places for all of our stuff before we headed across BC to go back to the US for a big family vacation in Glacier National Park.

That trip will be a whole other post, but in the meantime, I’m happy to say that we’re back again at home, and I’m thrilled to say that most of the boxes we’ve decided to unpack are finally unpacked! Huzzah! Doyce has done hero’s work in organizing all of the boxes that we’ve decided to leave packed in the garage, but with all of our things around us again, our rental truly does feel like “home”.

With that big milestone achieved, we’ve been able to spend more time around town. The kids and I went to the local library and picked up our library cards, as well as some more books to add to our towering TBR piles. Sean and Zoe also took part in a Teen Lock-In after hours, playing video games and doing crafts.

Meanwhile, Doyce and I enjoyed cocktails and small bites at a pub on the waterfront, and scoped out the boat ramp nearby to bring our paddleboards down and explore the island offshore. On another night, while Zoe went to a beach volleyball clinic, I discovered not one, but two! waterfront ice cream shops. I only was able to test out one, so clearly, we’ll head back soon.

You scream, I scream, we all scream…

We’ve done some biking, hiking, running, shopping, went to the movies twice (saw The Odyssey and Hadestown), and picked a favorite grocery store of the three closest, not counting Costco. Zoe and I are still on the hunt for a good nail salon, and she’s volunteered to be the first to try out a new hair salon. Doc got his nails done and a bath from a local groomer, and was, of course, a very good boy.

More adventures to come — stay tuned!
