P52: Week 8 — Low light

Continuing our theme of playing with light, this week is all about low light.

Low-light photography is all about capturing a great photo with minimal light. Many people assume that low-light automatically means night photography. While night photography is definitely low-light, there are other instances when the ambient (i.e. available) light is low (for example, some of us are in the middle of winter, with little to no sunlight in our homes; some of us have houses that do not allow for a lot of natural light, etc.). Human eyes can allow for an incredible range of light – they adjust quickly, and are very dynamic. So, while it may seem to our human optics that there’s plenty of light, our camera might disagree. In order to capture low-light images we must make some adjustments to the way we normally shoot.

I really wanted to play with some night photography, with headlight trails and such, but I put it off for too long, and suddenly it was the last night of the week, and snowing. Thus, a snowy shot of the house around 6pm on a cold February night. Shot at a 2 sec exposure at f/14, ISO 3200, at 10mm.

I also tried getting a shot of Zoe sleeping, but that was much harder to do in the dark. Got to keep working on it! Still, this isn’t too bad for a first (12th) attempt. 1 sec exposure at f/2.8, ISO 800, at 17mm.
