P52: Week 27 — Street Photography

This was my prompt this week, and here was the assignment I gave: I have to admit to cheating a bit for this week’s assignment. Street Photography isn’t something I do regularly, but every year that I’ve done this P52, the week that it pops up is always so exciting to me! It was an easy topic to pick, especially this week. With the 4th of July holiday happening this week in America, and all the assorted parades and festivities that may include, I thought it might make things a little more comfortable for those of us who are hesitant to take our “big cameras” out in public.

Which isn’t to say this has to be all parades and celebrations! I love the quiet sight of a simple family walk down a busy city sidewalk, or the random street corner sights you see in your hometown. Inspired by @karleehooper’s The Optimistic Photographer breakout, it may just be bringing your kids to a parking lots and shooting there!

If you want to go all out, strive for a documentary, fly-on-the-wall approach. Maybe you’ll make a new friend, meet a cute dog, or find a style of photography that inspires you – even if it’s just for one week a year. I do want to suggest you shoot with your DSLRs or mirrorless cameras, or whatever you would use for any other assignment. Don’t be shy! I’ve got some fun planned later this year for your iPhones!

My shot: this little one making a break for it at our town’s 4th of July carnival and fireworks show yesterday. I love the golden light, and her mom laughing in the background.
