2019 P52: Week 27 — Freedom

A belated Happy Canada Day to our neighbors to the north, and a happy Fourth of July to my fellow Americans! When I initially envisioned the prompt for this week, I settled on patriotism, but I have to admit, I’m having a personally tough time this year celebrating that concept, when it’s so tied in with our current political climate, and knowing that what certain parties view as good may be the opposite for others. So instead of dealing with the fraught concept, I want to dive into the intention behind the holidays many of us are celebrating this week — freedom and independence.

For some, that may still be fireworks and flags and picnics, but I invite you to explore other ideas for what freedom may mean for you — is it the teenager with their new drivers’ license, or a baby taking their first steps, or a dog off-leash enjoying a romp in a meadow. What speaks to freedom and independence to you as a photographer? Is it freedom from themes and directions? Consider this a photographer’s choice week! As busy moms, maybe independence means the chance to take a quiet selfie, or read a book, or just have five minutes to yourself in the bathroom!

Whatever it means to you, I look forward to seeing your images of freedom!!

My little girl isn’t exactly a thrill-seeker, but you can’t tell her she’s too young or too small to do anything her big sister or big brother do. Here she is conquering an underwater flip (can’t recall if this was a forward flip or backwards!) on the fourth of July. My little Miss Independent!
