P52: Week 12 — Centered Composition

From the assignment thread:

We often hear about using of the Rule of Thirds, and how, by placing your subject off-center you’re likely to create a more dynamic image. But, choosing the center of the image for subject placement shouldn’t automatically be ruled out — and, it doesn’t automatically mean “boring”. On the contrary, it’s just like any other photographic technique we discuss/consider: The choice to compose an image lays with the photographer. The two most critical parts of subject placement: (1) It makes sense, and (2) you did it intentionally. Let’s discuss the “why” of choosing the center of the frame for placement.

1. You want to reinforce balance and/or symmetry.
2. You want to emphasize space or size.
3. To draw attention to the subject.
4. One of my favorite reasons: To demonstrate peace or calm.
